Live to Work ? Work to Live ?
work-life balance is a tricky thing ... In my paid jobs I've always been a work to live kind of girl ,yes i'll stay over to pull the team out the mire, yes i'll take overtime when it's offered ... but a lot of the time , even when i working in healthcare, my job stayed in my locker and I tried not to take it home...
However that wasn't always possible and there are still moments I relive in glorious technicolour and smellovision and I doubt they will ever leave me , they are moments in extremis... I used to be a Registered Nurse who worked in the Emergency Department so these moments will be pretty extreme.
A missed clue over my identity surfaced when i became an Emergency Department Nurse , " You're different person in the resus room " said colleagues " and that is meant as a compliment , it's like you shift gear and 'bam' , cool as a cucumber taking care of business... "
After i'd left Nursing I realised something - that change was the mask dropping that was Nicola taking charge, 'shedding load' as such ...
Those who know me pre-transition will also know I used to do a lot of volunteer work related to healthcare both practically delivering emergency care at events and supporting the Ambulance service and a lot of policy, governance and training work... i threw myself into that to stop thinking aobut certain things... much as i had thrown my self in my involvement with the Reserve Forces for 3 or 4 years as a Student and NQN ... (sorry voyeurs no stories about spending several hours getting ready as Nicola and then having to scrub it all off to throw mess dress or a Dinner jacket on - although one of my capbadges one in particular had a very nice female mess dress due to a redesign when the capbadge went mixed)...
Now - I do work to live, my job is a job i take pride in what i do ( as the reward scheme letters and the occasional set of 'points mean prizes' show ) and i'll done some service improvement stuff of my own back and as i said in Hello World i'm now also a trade union rep for my department.
