what is it like being on hormones? (Content warning discussion of Genitalia)
My good internet friend Sammie made a video about being on hormones here.
A lot the things she says in the video are common experiences for any trans woman, the speed, exact order and how much, how quick is very much an individual matter...
The sense of smell stuff ... I used to find cooked eggs a bit off putting before hormones and GnRH analogues, since starting my medical transition and especially since being on the GnRH analogues - I now cannot be in the same room as cooked eggs without being naseuous...
Speaking of smells one thing I found changing fairly quickly after starting hormones was the smell of my sweat and with that I started to notice that men smell of something even if freshly laundered...
Yes my emotional patterns changed, I have found myself much more likely to cry, although mainly in response to an emotional stimulus. There's been a few things that have been bordering on problematic especially;
To my Dad - Unsurprising given it's content as it's specifically close to home
Dance Like Nobody's Watching - While it's not my story, there are parallels.
Yes i've had breast development, sufficient all ready for my to need to think about how i support them, and interestingly one of the techniques in use allows me to wear a leotard without a bra.
As a result of the hormones and more specifically the addition of the GnRH Analogue certain things no long happen spontaneously as a a result of having, at the last set of blood test a female hormonal profile in terms of Oestrodiol, Prolactin and Testosterone... yes things do still happen if stimulated, but then again things happen to cisgender women's genitalia when they are stimulated... and to answer the next question yes 'production' has ceased...
Has being on hormones affected my dancing? yes and no ... my stamina is slightly different and my upper body strength has changed - (which has made actual work harder work), and while the GnRH analogue has suppressed my testosterone levels it's only suppressed it towards the lower limits of normal female levels ( yes ladies you do have some testosterone) this hasn't lead , at this time to the wobbles that some people have reported)
