Called to the Bar(re)

Although I've written a piece with a similar title before about barre exercises in ballet class- my  view has changed a bit since wrote that  but  maybe that just reflects the confidence and maturity I've developed as a dancer in the not quite two and a half years since I wrote that post. Also, shock horror, even certain teachers who were always adamant on the topic have mellowed - perhaps in the light of the time spent on Zoom and other similar platforms...

This piece, however, is about the people who make up the Adult Ballet community, the legal pun being spurred not by a Call to the Bar but by an acquaintance getting Silk (becoming a QC), having been called to the bar a good few years ago.

so who are  adult recreational  dancers , in both ballet and contemporary...

The answer is there is no one defining and uniting characteristic apart from the want, need and desire to dance.

Is there a 'type' ?  No

An age group ?  well I suppose  16/18 to over 80is an age group...

is there a profession?  no, not at all , you  can literally be next to anyone from a dustman to a QC vis Nurse, shipping agent, museum curator, logistics person, Doctor, teacher ...

Is there an educational level? there seems to be plenty of people who are graduates  who are recreational dancers and I know a few teachers have said it gives them a whole new take on things  when there are more degrees than dancers in the studio...

did  everyone dance as a child ?  - firmly no !

is everyone skinny  ?  - certainly not !
